Pretoria City Tour – Day Tour

The Jacaranda City, City of Roses, also known as a centre of learning in South Africa and home of the country’s many Scientific Research Institutions. Besides the above, Pretoria had been the Administrative capital of the country since 1866 to present day. Pretoria was established by colonist previously from the Cape colony after embarking on the Great Trek.

1. Voortrekker Monument
The biggest monument in Africa was erected in honour of and to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left Cape colony in search of their own independence and freedom. This was known as “The Great Trek” and started in 1835. The foundation stones were laid on 16th December 1938 marking 100 years after the battle of “Blood River” that took place on 16th December 1838. after the abolishment of Apartheid, this day gained a special place in the history of South Africa and was renamed- Reconciliation Day.

2. Paul Kruger House
On the one side of the longest straight street in Johannesburg, is the location of the house of ex Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek President Paul Kruger. Despite the fall of apartheid, several popular places are still named after him. The Paul Kruger house is located along Church Street not far from his presidential office in Church square.

3. Church Square
Church Square is the central point of Pretoria city. The first administrative capital of Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek began there in 1866. Church Square is surrounded by many historical buildings, most designed and constructed after Paul Kruger was elected as President. In the center of the square, where two famous Pretoria city streets meet, standing high, is a bronze statue of Paul Kruger. Kruger is depicted in his official clothes. The statue was sculpted by Anton Van Wouw in 1899, the year of the 2nd Anglo- Boer War that ultimately forced Kruger to leave his beloved Transvaal for exile in Europe.

4. Union Buildings
The highest point of Pretoria is constituted by a South African Heritage site. This is the official seat of the South African Government and houses the offices of the President of South Africa. Designed by renowned Architect Sir Herbert Baker, the construction began in 1910 and was completed in 1913. This is the last stop of the tour and is an opportunity for a panoramic view of the beautiful Pretoria city.

Delvillewood war memorial, Nelson Mandela 9m bronze statue, Gen. Louie Botha statue and some Artilleries used in both South Africa’s wars.
